Spring, roughly April to June, is when the waterfalls are at their most powerful, fed by snowmelt from the surrounding hills, and the forest fills with wildflowers. Crowds are milder than in high summer, and ticket prices sit at the shoulder-season rate into May. Late spring — May and June — is one of the two best windows of the whole year: strong water, pleasant weather, and boardwalks you can actually move along. If you want Plitvice at its most dramatic, come in spring.
Summer: peak everything
July and August are the busiest, hottest and most expensive months. The lakes are beautiful, but the boardwalks are crowded from mid-morning, the timed slots sell out well ahead, and the peak ticket price applies. Summer isn't a mistake — for many travellers it's simply when the trip happens — but it demands the most planning: book an included-entry tour, take an early or late slot, start from the quieter entrance, and accept that you'll be sharing the park.
Autumn: colour and calm
Autumn is many people's favourite, and the other sweet spot of the year. September holds onto summer's warmth with noticeably thinner crowds, and October sets the forested slopes ablaze with foliage colour, mirrored in the turquoise water — an effect that has to be seen to be believed — while shoulder-season tickets bring the price down. If you can choose any time to visit Plitvice, a clear October day is about as good as it gets.
Winter: solitude and snow
From November to March, Plitvice becomes a different, quieter world: snow on the boardwalks, ice fringing the falls, near-solitude, and the cheapest tickets of the year. The trade-offs are real — shorter opening hours, and some trails and the boat can close in ice and snow, so parts of the park may be off-limits. But for a traveller who doesn't mind the cold and wants the lakes almost to themselves, a snowy Plitvice is quietly magical. Check current conditions and closures before you commit.
